North Dakota Men’s Basketball Falls to South Dakota in High-Scoring Summit League Showdown
Grand Forks, N.D. — January 25, 2025 — In a thrilling Summit League matchup, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks fell to the South Dakota Coyotes 102-93 Thursday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The game began strong for the Hawks, fueled by an impressive first-half performance from sophomore guard Mier Panoam, who led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting. North Dakota entered halftime with a narrow 51-49 lead after a combined 15 three-pointers from both teams showcased their sharpshooting skills. Junior forward Dariyus Woodson contributed significantly, sinking three triples early on.
However, the second half saw a shift in momentum. After starting strong, the Hawks faced a critical scoring drought in the final ten minutes, allowing USD to execute a decisive 20-6 run, taking a commanding 90-79 lead. Despite a late surge from North Dakota that saw them get back within nine points, they couldn’t close the gap.
On a positive note for the Hawks, their team shot 50.7%, hitting 10 three-pointers for only the second time in Summit League action this season. Panoam also notched his sixth game of 20 or more points, and fellow team members Treysen Eaglestaff and Mambourou Mara added 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Looking ahead, North Dakota will face rival North Dakota State on Saturday as the two teams meet for the 310th time in history, with UND leading the all-time series. The game is scheduled for 4 P.M. and will broadcast live on Midco Sports and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
