Kristie Fiegen Faces Personal and Professional Challenges Amid Re-election Campaign
HERMOSA, SD – Over the past year, Kristie Fiegen, chairperson of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC), has navigated an array of challenges ranging from energy policy to a personal health crisis. As concerns grow over electricity transmission reliability and carbon pipeline projects, Fiegen has remained focused on her duties while campaigning for another term.
During a recent campaign event in the Black Hills, Fiegen faced an unforeseen family emergency when her husband, Tim, suffered a cardiac arrest. With a history of heart issues, Tim collapsed as he prepared for the event. Kristie promptly called 911 and began CPR, leading to a swift response from nearby firefighters who resuscitated him after multiple shocks with a defibrillator. Tim is now recovering at home, buoyed by family support and messages from the community.
With her husband on the mend, Fiegen’s campaign takes a new direction. Having traveled over 50,000 miles statewide, she will rely on volunteers and family to help as she aims to secure her place against Libertarian candidate Gideon Oakes and Democrat Forrest Wilson.
Fiegen’s work on the PUC has been pivotal, especially in navigating the complexities of reliability amid energy transitions away from fossil fuels. She emphasizes that while clean energy is essential, maintaining reliable electricity for South Dakotans remains her primary focus.
Her opponents are pushing for fresh perspectives in energy policy. Oakes argues that experience isn’t everything in this pivotal election, advocating for renewable sources and reduced barriers to energy technology.
As the election approaches, Fiegen reflects on the support she has received amidst her recent challenges, stating, “I love this state and the people in it… their prayers and support have meant everything.”
