Memorial Day Weekend Travel Outlook

Record Traveler Numbers Boosted by Low Gas Prices

Fargo, N.D. (KVRR) – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, record-low gas prices are driving a surge in travel. Currently, North Dakota’s average gas price stands at approximately $2.92 per gallon, a notable drop from $3.34 last year, according to Skyler McKinley of AAA. This reduction has encouraged an expected 45.1 million travelers nationwide for the holiday weekend, making it the highest number on record.

Of those travelers, around 39.4 million are anticipated to take road trips. Air travel is also on the rise, with the rollout of Real ID causing fewer delays than initially feared. Captain Bryan Niewind of the North Dakota Highway Patrol emphasizes the importance of vehicle preparedness, suggesting travelers check their oil, transmission fluid, and overall vehicle condition before hitting the road.

With many heading to popular lake destinations, Niewind advises extra caution, especially for those towing campers and trailers. He reminds drivers to remain vigilant and focused, emphasizing defensive driving to navigate potential hazards effectively. As travel ramps up, these safety tips will be essential for a smooth and enjoyable holiday weekend.
