Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to Deliver Keynote at South Dakota Democrats’ McGovern Day Dinner
Sioux Falls, SD – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is set to be the keynote speaker at the South Dakota Democratic Party’s (SDDP) annual McGovern Day dinner, scheduled for July 12 in Sioux Falls. This event commemorates the legacy of George McGovern, a three-term U.S. senator and 1972 Democratic presidential nominee from Mitchell, South Dakota.
SDDP Chair Shane Merrill expressed enthusiasm for Walz’s visit, highlighting his Midwestern roots and commitment to rural Democrat values. “He’s a true Midwesterner, growing up in rural Nebraska near the South Dakota border. I am excited to hear what he has to share as we honor McGovern, who fought for all South Dakotans in Congress,” Merrill noted in a press release.
Walz, who was first elected governor of Minnesota in 2018 and reelected in 2022, has gained national attention after being chosen as vice presidential running mate by Kamala Harris for the 2024 election. The pair faced off against Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance, ultimately losing the race.
This visit marks Walz’s first appearance in South Dakota in several years and notably comes after a contentious campaign where South Dakota’s Republican leaders criticized the Harris-Walz ticket. Former Governor Kristi Noem and U.S. Senator John Thune derided the duo, labeling their campaign as “radical.”
Despite this, the SDDP is optimistic about Walz’s influence and leadership. “It is an honor to have him visit us this summer. His administration exemplifies good governance in the Midwest,” said SDDP Vice Chair Jessica Meyers.
