University of North Dakota Unveils Memorial Stadium Monument to Honor WWI Veterans
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota (UND) has officially unveiled the Memorial Stadium Monument in Memorial Village, honoring the students who left the university to serve in World War I and did not return. The ceremony, marked by flag presentations from the American Legion and the National Anthem sung by Joel Ness, assistant professor of engineering, reinforced the importance of remembering these brave individuals.
President Andy Armacost opened the event, emphasizing the monument’s significance. “This new structure pays tribute to the courage, commitment, and character of those young men, along with all the athletes, alumni, and fans associated with this university,” he stated. The monument, situated at the historic Memorial Stadium site, reflects both military traditions and UND’s stature as North Dakota’s flagship university.
Steve Burian of Memorial Village LLC explained the design, which features robust granite pillars that symbolize the core values of military service: Loyalty, Respect, Service, Courage, Honor, and Sacrifice. “These pillars represent the timeless strength of those who served,” Burian noted.
Tim Belmore, Associate Athletic Director, emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives. “This monument is not just a tribute; it is a promise to remember those who served the greater good,” he remarked.
To further preserve the memory of these veterans, a time capsule will be placed within the monument, slated to be opened in 50 years. It will contain items such as the last flag to fly over the stadium, a 1921 Dakota Annual featuring 33 soldiers, and a handwritten note from President Armacost to a future leader.
