SDSU Jackrabbits Earn Fifth Straight Commissioner’s Cup, Set League Record
Sioux Falls, SD — South Dakota State University (SDSU) has made history by claiming its fifth consecutive Summit League Commissioner’s Cup and setting a new record with a total of 10 titles, according to the conference office’s announcement this week. The Jackrabbits secured victory with an impressive 94 points across both men’s and women’s programs, along with sweeping the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award.
The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually based on combined performance in regular-season standings for various sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, as well as championship placements in cross country, swimming and diving, and golf. This year, under the stewardship of Athletics Director Justin Sell, SDSU achieved regular-season titles in women’s basketball and volleyball, along with a championship in women’s cross country. Notably, the Jackrabbit men became the first team since 2006-07 to win championships in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field in the same season, extending their men’s cross country title streak to nine—another league record.
Key contributions also came from the women’s golf team, which placed second at the Summit League Championship, while women’s soccer, softball, and men’s swimming & diving finished third in their respective standings.
Finishing behind SDSU, North Dakota State took second with 87 points, and South Dakota followed closely in third with 78. The awards were presented by Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton during the League’s annual meeting in Omaha.
As SDSU looks ahead to next year, it continues to solidify its dominance in the Summit League, setting the stage for more exciting competition in the 2024-25 season.
