South Dakota State Women’s Basketball Dominates Omaha in Summit League Quarterfinals
Sioux Falls, S.D. – The No. 1 South Dakota State Jackrabbits showcased their strength in the Summit League Tournament, decisively defeating the Omaha Mavericks 87-67 in the quarterfinal round at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Thursday afternoon.
A pivotal second quarter propelled the Jackrabbits to victory, where they outscored Omaha 31-14. Brooklyn Meyer led the charge with an impressive 16 points, contributing significantly to a balanced offense with five players reaching double figures. This collaborative effort was evident as Madysen Vlastuin and Paige Meyer each added 12 points, while Madison Mathiowetz and Haleigh Timmer chipped in 11 apiece, supporting the team’s 58% shooting performance.
The game began with a tightly contested first quarter, but SDSU’s offense began to find its rhythm as Emilee Fox’s three-pointer secured a 21-16 lead at the end of the first. A combination of timely scoring from Fox, Timmer, Byom, and Theisen initiated a 10-0 run in the second quarter, extending the lead and allowing the Jackrabbits to go into halftime with a 15-point advantage.
Mesa Byom led on the boards with seven rebounds while also scoring eight points. Kallie Theisen achieved a career-high with eight points, and Fox set personal bests for minutes played (25), assists (6), and rebounds (6) to accompany her six points. For Omaha, Grace Cave scored 20 points, and Ja Harvey added 17.
With this victory, the Jackrabbits improved their NCAA Tournament record to an impressive 39-5 and will next face the winner of the St. Thomas versus North Dakota matchup on Saturday at noon.
