Fighting Hawks Fall to Jackrabbits Despite Strong Efforts
Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team faced a tough loss against South Dakota State University, finishing at 87-73 during Saturday’s game at the First Bank & Trust Arena. This defeat leaves the Fighting Hawks with an overall record of 8-11 and a Summit League record of 3-3.
The game began slowly for North Dakota, trailing 26-14 at the end of the first quarter. South Dakota State displayed an impressive shooting performance, hitting 53.8% of their shots. While the Hawks responded with a better second-quarter performance, shooting 56.3%, South Dakota State maintained their lead, resulting in a 49-37 halftime score.
Jocelyn Schiller shone in the second quarter, leading the team with nine points, including two three-pointers. In the third quarter, despite a combined effort from Schiller and Kiera Pemberton, who contributed 11 points, the Hawks only marginally outscored the Jackrabbits, ending the period down by 12 points.
The final quarter saw an aggressive push from North Dakota, but they could not close the gap. Schiller led the charge with six points in the quarter, ultimately leading the team with a total of 19 points for the game, alongside Pemberton’s 15 points and six rebounds.
Statistical highlights include North Dakota shooting 47.4% from the field compared to South Dakota’s 53.2%. The Hawks also excelled at the free-throw line, making 78.6% of their attempts.
