Gooseneck Implement Tests Autonomous Tractor Technology in North Dakota
GLEN ULLIN, N.D. — A remarkable transformation in farming technology was observed recently as a driverless John Deere tractor autonomously performed tillage work in Morton County. Jim Campbell, equipment specialist lead at Gooseneck Implement, confirmed the tractor’s newfound capability, noting, “It’s running by itself,” while breaking up corn stubble in preparation for canola planting.
The Precision Upgrade Kit being tested can be fitted to existing 9R, 9RX, 8R, and 8RX models, marking a significant advance in agricultural automation. Although this technology is in limited production and not available commercially yet, it represents a leap forward in addressing labor shortages projected to hit the agricultural sector in the coming years.
Equipped with 16 cameras and satellite connectivity through JDLink Boost, the system can autonomously navigate fields and respond to obstacles, ensuring safety and efficiency. While some farmers may initially feel apprehensive about trusting such advanced technology, Campbell believes its effectiveness will soon win over skeptics.
