North Dakota Joins Eight Other States with 80 mph Speed Limit

North Dakota to Raise Speed Limit to 80 MPH

North Dakota will soon allow drivers to reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour on select multi-lane highways, making it the ninth state in the U.S. to implement such limits. The new law, passed by the state legislature, will take effect on August 1, and it will also introduce higher fines for speeding violations.

Neighboring states, including Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota, have already adopted higher speed limits, with some Texas toll roads boasting a maximum of 85 mph. Since 1995, states have had the authority to set their own speed limits.

However, increased speed limits can come with dangerous consequences. A report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety highlighted that raising the speed limit by just 5 mph correlates with an 8% increase in fatality rates on interstates and a 3% rise on other roads. As of now, Alabama’s maximum interstate speed is 70 mph, shared by 21 other states.

As North Dakota prepares to join the ranks of states emphasizing higher speed travel, officials and safety advocates continue to voice concerns about the associated risks.
