Trump Postpones 50% Tariffs on the E.U. Until July 9

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has agreed to extend the deadline for a 50% tariff on the European Union until July 9, 2025. This decision came after a call from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who requested the extension to facilitate further negotiations. Trump shared his agreement on the platform Truth Social, expressing that it was a privilege to grant the extension.

Von der Leyen described the call as “good” and emphasized the importance of reaching a beneficial trade agreement. She noted the significance of the US-EU trade relationship, which is one of the most substantial globally, and indicated that Europe was ready to engage in negotiations promptly and effectively.

Previously, Trump had imposed a 20% tariff on the EU, later reducing it to 10% for a temporary period. However, he suggested implementing a straight 50% tariff as of June 1, criticizing the EU for being challenging to negotiate with, and claimed discussions were stagnant. Despite the looming tariff deadline, Trump indicated he wasn’t inclined to finalize a deal before June 1, expressing a willingness to approach trade “the way I know how to play the game.”

The extension reflects ongoing tensions and the complexities in US-EU trade relations. As both parties work toward finding common ground, the prolonged deadline gives them additional time to negotiate terms that could benefit both sides.
