On Memorial Day evening, a boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, left nearly a dozen people hospitalized, including two children. The incident, which occurred around 5:45 p.m. near the New River Triangle, involved 13 individuals aboard the vessel when the explosion occurred. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the explosion sent people into the water, prompting immediate rescue efforts by good Samaritans.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman stated that the cause of the explosion is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway. Surveillance footage captured the moment of the explosion, showing a fireball erupting from the boat and people falling into the water. Eleven patients, including two children, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, with several suffering significant burns. Many of the patients were later transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital, which includes a burn unit. There, eight adults were reported in good condition, while the two children were in fair condition.
Antonio Rivero, a passenger, described the event, suggesting that a possible gas leak ignited during refueling, resulting in the explosion. Rivero suffered burns to his arm, while his wife and children remained hospitalized. Witnesses described seeing multiple individuals with severe burn injuries and stated they rushed to help rescue victims from the water. Aerial footage revealed extensive emergency response efforts involving various agencies.
As investigations by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and fire officials continue, it was noted that a dog onboard was also rescued and unharmed.
