North Dakota Fishing and Wildlife Update: Record Numbers Explored

WEST FARGO – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is making significant strides in managing the state’s outdoor resources, as detailed by Director Jeb Williams during a recent legislative session. The department oversees 439 fishable waters encompassing 851,462 acres within the state’s 70,704 square miles, highlighting a robust ecosystem for fishing enthusiasts.

In 2023, the department stocked 14 million fish, marking one of its highest figures to date and providing enhanced access through 37 community fishing ponds. The popularity of fishing is evident, with 142,272 residents and 55,379 non-residents purchasing licenses this year.

Hunting also shows promising statistics, with over 100,000 general game licenses sold. Notably, youth deer hunting licenses reached a record 6,503 issued in 2024. The successful Private Land Open To Sportsmen (PLOTS) program has expanded significantly, now covering 836,000 acres.

The Wildlife Division continues to safeguard North Dakota’s wildlife from chronic wasting disease, having tested over 47,000 animals since 2000. Challenges remain, notably the shortage of game wardens, with North Dakota ranking 47th in officer density.
