Valley City High School Girls’ Basketball Team Retains Class A Status After Successful Appeal
VALLEY CITY, N.D. – In a landmark decision, the Valley City High School girls’ basketball team has successfully appealed to remain in Class A after their impressive win in the Class A state championship. This ruling was made by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Classification Committee following a presentation led by Activities Director Rob Hunt.
Valley City’s victory marks a significant milestone, as it was the team’s first state championship in this classification. Despite their success, the team faced potential reclassification to Class AA due to accumulating success points, which are awarded for advancing in playoffs and winning state titles. Historically, Valley City has struggled at the Class AA level, with no winning seasons noted since the 2013-14 season.
The committee’s decision comes amid a backdrop of mixed enrollments within the Class AA Eastern Dakota Conference, where most schools boast over 1,000 students. In contrast, Valley City has a significantly smaller enrollment, comparable only to that of Shanley High School, a private institution.
Support for Valley City’s appeal was reinforced by neighboring schools in Region 1, emphasizing their desire for the Hi-Liners to stay in Class A. Other appeals from schools like Devils Lake and Kindred were also heard by the committee. Ultimately, these schools were allowed to maintain their current classifications as well.
The committee engaged in discussions regarding the effectiveness of the success points system, contemplating potential adjustments to ensure fairer classification processes for future seasons. As North Dakota’s basketball classification system continues to evolve, the implications of these decisions will shape the future of high school athletics in the region.
