Rising Measles Cases Prompt Health Alert in North Dakota

BOWBELLS, N.D. — The North Dakota Health and Human Services Department has reported a surge in measles cases, marking the state’s first confirmed case in Burke County, which previously had none. As of May 29, a total of 28 measles cases have been documented, an increase of seven since last week, primarily linked to exposure in Williams County, where 13 cases were identified.

The outbreak has predominantly affected individuals under the age of 20, with 23 cases reported, including three among children younger than five. This marks the highest number of measles cases in North Dakota since 1978, when 211 cases were recorded.

Health officials have noted potential exposure locations in Divide County and urge vigilance, as measles is highly contagious and can remain airborne in spaces for up to two hours. Vaccination remains critical; while North Dakota boasts nearly a 90% vaccination rate, the department recommends two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for optimal protection.

Residents born before 1957 are generally considered immune, while unvaccinated individuals should quarantine for 21 days post-exposure. More information about measles and vaccination can be accessed through the state health department’s website.
