Pipeline Spill in North Dakota Discharges More than 3 Million Gallons of Brine

Pipeline Spill in North Dakota Releases 73,000 Barrels of Brine

Tioga, ND – A significant pipeline failure in Williams County has resulted in an estimated spill of 73,000 barrels, or nearly 3.1 million gallons, of brine, a byproduct of oil production. The incident occurred about 16 miles northeast of Williston and was reported by staff from Continental Resources to state regulators.

Marty Haroldson from the Division of Water Quality described the spill as considerable, noting that it contaminated grassy land and an unnamed tributary that leads to Stony Creek. Fortunately, the spill did not reach the creek, and officials stated there have been no impacts to nearby drinking water sources.

In response to the spill, teams began fluid removal earlier this week and took immediate action to contain the contamination by blocking culverts and setting up berms. Crews are actively working on excavating the pipeline for repairs. The Department of Environmental Quality continues to monitor the situation as cleanup efforts proceed.
