Lexington County School District One to Revamp Technology Policies for Enhanced Learning
Lexington County, SC – The Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees is set to revitalize its technology policies across all grade levels to better integrate digital tools into the educational landscape. During a recent board meeting, Howard Bissell, the district’s director of instructional technology, provided an overview of the district’s philosophy regarding technology in education.
Bissell emphasized that while technology is essential, it remains a tool to support teachers—who he stated are the core of instructional delivery. He noted, "We don’t use technology for everything. But when it’s the right fit, it can accelerate learning or make something possible that wasn’t possible before.”
For students in grades K-2, technology is utilized sparingly, focusing on foundational skills through teacher-directed learning. Short digital sessions help cultivate creativity and important digital habits under close supervision. In grades 3-5, the use of technology expands, reinforcing foundational skills and promoting student independence in managing their devices, particularly in preparation for online standardized assessments by third grade.
As students transition to middle school, technology increasingly supports critical thinking, collaboration, and research. By high school, students are expected to use technology independently, engaging in complex projects that mirror real-world challenges.
Chairwoman Katie Henson highlighted the importance of professional development for teachers in artificial intelligence and technology. Bissell confirmed that the district is implementing a professional learning series focusing on AI literacy.
In the coming months, the administration will propose revisions to the board’s technology usage policies to ensure that students are well-equipped for the digital demands of the modern world.
