The NAACP has urged local regulators in South Memphis to cease operations of Elon Musk’s supercomputer project, xAI, citing non-compliance with environmental regulations. In a letter addressed to Dr. Michelle Taylor of the Shelby County Health Department and Memphis Light Gas and Water commissioners, the civil rights group expressed concerns about the project’s potential impact on the health of nearby Black communities. NAACP President Derrick Johnson emphasized that wealth does not exempt individuals from the responsibilities of pollution.
xAI has faced scrutiny for using methane gas turbines to power its supercomputer, Colossus, which reportedly emits harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. Environmental groups argue that the turbines need permits under the Clean Air Act, although local officials, including the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce, assert that permits weren’t necessary during their initial year of operation.
As xAI seeks approval for 15 permanent turbines with pollution controls, residents in the nearby Boxtown neighborhood have voiced concerns regarding air quality deterioration. One resident, Easter Knox, highlighted the health risks posed by pollution, especially concerning her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
While xAI claims compliance with all applicable laws and collaborative efforts with local and federal authorities, critics argue that the potential economic benefits do not outweigh environmental risks. Shelby County health officials are expected to make a decision on xAI’s permit application soon. Meanwhile, Memphis Mayor Paul Young has indicated plans for air quality monitoring in the area as part of ongoing community health efforts. The situation highlights the tension between technological advancement and environmental sustainability in vulnerable communities.
