Walhalla School District Seeks Mill Increase Vote to Address Budget Shortfalls
WALHALLA, N.D. — The North Border School District is set to hold a crucial vote on June 5, aimed at increasing the mill levy from five to ten mills. This initiative seeks to alleviate financial pressures on the district’s general fund, primarily for building maintenance and servicing a 20-year bond from prior renovations.
Superintendent Seth Engelstad emphasizes the importance of this increase in maintaining school facilities and attracting quality staff amid a persistent teacher shortage. “We’re trying to stay competitive in a tight job market,” he stated, noting that many positions remain unfilled.
The district oversees several facilities, including schools in Pembina and Walhalla, and has faced significant budgetary strains due to inflation and rising maintenance costs. Engelstad revealed that over $150,000 annually has been redirected from the general fund to manage regular maintenance and bond payments, creating an unsustainable financial model.
A similar proposal last year garnered majority support but fell short of the required 60% approval. Engelstad remains hopeful, believing that community backing could propel this initiative to success. Despite financial challenges, the district boasts strong academic performance, outscoring state averages on assessments, indicating a solid foundation to build upon.
