Fargo Tree Named Second-Largest Green Ash in North Dakota
FARGO — A towering 75-foot green ash tree in Keith Corliss’ backyard has earned recognition as the second-largest of its kind in North Dakota. When he purchased his home three years ago, Corliss discovered the impressive tree, recently named runner-up in the North Dakota Register of Champion Trees.
The North Dakota Forest Service evaluates tree size using a formula based on circumference, height, and average crown spread. Corliss’ ash measures 9 feet in circumference and boasts a crown spread of 73 feet. Although the champion tree, located in Bismarck, is shorter at 65 feet, it has a larger trunk circumference.
Corliss, a company pilot at Forum Communications, entered his tree into the competition after learning about the program from the late Bob Kloubec, a notable champion tree advocate in the state. While the tree recently lost a limb in an ice storm, Corliss is now more aware of its significance and is developing a plan to safeguard it against the invasive emerald ash borer.
The North Dakota Champion Tree Program continues to identify and celebrate remarkable trees, encouraging residents to discover their own contenders.
