Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Grows to 18 States, Resulting in 45 Illnesses

A salmonella outbreak linked to a cucumber producer in Florida has led to 45 reported illnesses across 18 states, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Target stores, among others, have urged customers to discard recalled products that include cucumbers and prepared items featuring them, such as Boar’s Head Greek-style chicken salad and various sushi rolls from the Mai brand. Previously, Walmart also warned customers about its Marketside cucumber slices, which are part of the recall.

Cases have emerged in states including Alabama, California, Florida, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Of the 45 reported illnesses, 16 individuals have been hospitalized, but no fatalities have occurred. The FDA’s focus is on the salmonella montevideo strain, although other strains were identified at a Pennsylvania distribution center linked to Bedner Growers, the cucumber source. These additional strains seem unrelated to a prior outbreak, but investigations are ongoing alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The affected cucumbers, labeled as “supers,” “selects,” or “plains,” were sold from April 29 to May 19 and were initially discovered at three Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market locations in Florida. Following inspections revealing contamination, both Bedner Growers and Fresh Start Produce Sales have expressed commitment to public health during this recall.

Salmonella bacteria can contaminate produce, particularly when in contact with animals or their fecal matter. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and immunocompromised individuals, face heightened risks of severe symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. The CDC emphasizes that salmonella is a significant cause of foodborne illnesses worldwide.
