Authorities are investigating the discovery of a badly burned body of a young man found in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia, on Saturday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local officials as they work to identify the deceased. A hiker reported the body, found around 8:18 a.m. on the less traveled side of the mountain, approximately 100 yards from the Summit Skyride, a cable car attraction. John Bankhead, spokesperson for the Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety, indicated that the site is not remote but does not see frequent hiker traffic, remarking on its unusualness.
An autopsy has been scheduled by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office for Monday. Bankhead noted that while authorities have a potential identity for the man based on personal belongings and a vehicle located nearby, confirmation has yet to be made. The fire linked to the body is also under investigation by the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department’s arson unit.
Stone Mountain Park, which features a lakeside resort and celebrates a controversial sculpture depicting Confederate leaders, is located about 20 miles east of Atlanta. The park’s history includes a mixed reputation, marked by protests and debates over its prominent Confederate figures—Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson—depicted in the largest high relief sculpture globally, completed between 1924 and 1972. This tragic incident has left local authorities, who have never encountered anything similar in their years at the park, puzzled and searching for answers.
