Obituary: Gary Wegenast (1939-2025)
Minot, ND – Gary Norris Wegenast, 86, formerly of Fargo and Edgeley, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at a Minot assisted living facility, surrounded by family.
Born on February 15, 1939, in Edgeley, ND, to Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Taszarek) Wegenast, Gary grew up on a farm and attended Ray Township School. He graduated from Edgeley High School and married Neva Ann Kelder on September 25, 1959, in Verona, ND. Following Neva’s passing in 1991, he wed Genevieve Redlin on September 29, 1991, in Brookings, SD.
Gary made significant contributions in various fields, notably working at several Arabian horse ranches and agricultural seed sales. A dedicated member of the North Dakota National Guard, he also served on the Edgeley City Council for 24 years, contributing to the ND League of Cities. His passion for horses was evident in his involvement with training, showing, breeding, and equestrian events, as well as his work as a farrier.
He is survived by his beloved wife Genevieve; children Rory, Todd (Nancy), and Jodi (Corey); daughter-in-law Tracy; stepdaughters Vonda Smith, Brenda (Dale) Sargent, and Cary Redlin; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 16 step-great-grandchildren, and siblings Robert (Judy) and Leroy (Leanne) Wegenast, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Neva Ann, son Joel, stepdaughter Lori Redlin, and step-son-in-law Jeff Smith.
A family graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Jamestown on June 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are encouraged to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Messages of condolence can be shared at www.thomasfamilyfuneralhome.com.
