K-pop Has Been Banned in China for Nearly a Decade—Is That Changing?

A recent concert by the K-pop band Epex in mainland China was highly anticipated as it would have marked the first performance by an all-Korean act in nearly a decade, following an unofficial ban linked to political tensions over an American missile defense system deployed in South Korea. The concert, scheduled for May in Fuzhou, was abruptly canceled due to “local circumstances,” leaving fans like university student Haerin Ouyang disappointed.

Despite the ban on K-pop events, South Korea regards China’s consumer power as significant, especially in the K-content and K-pop markets, with estimates of a $16 billion loss for the South Korean economy since 2016. However, some South Korean bands have managed to perform in China recently; for example, the hip-hop trio Homies was the first all-Korean act to perform in eight years this April.

There is cautious optimism regarding the future of K-pop in China. Analysts suggest the cancellation of the Epex concert does not reflect a definitive stance from the Chinese government, which has been gradually opening up to South Korean culture, as evidenced by a large K-pop event scheduled for Hainan later this year.

Increasingly friendly diplomatic ties are also notable, with both countries recently announcing visa exemptions for each other’s visitors, spurred partly by unstable U.S. trade policies, and China’s desire to bolster its own economy through K-pop fans. Additionally, the Chinese entertainment industry is becoming more resilient against foreign influences. As South Korea prepares for an upcoming presidential election, the potential shift in leadership may further enhance opportunities for Korean entertainers in China.
