On Sunday night in downtown Salem, Oregon, eleven individuals were hospitalized after a stabbing incident at the Union Gospel Mission, a homeless services provider. Salem police confirmed that a suspect, a male who had stayed at the mission the previous night, was taken into custody following the violence, which occurred around 7:15 PM. The injured parties were transported to Salem Hospital, although details regarding their injuries have not been disclosed.
Executive Director Craig Smith reported that the suspect was about to check in for a second night when he became involved in a fight shortly before handing over his belongings to staff. Smith noted that the individual was visibly agitated and had a knife concealed in his bag. Among the injured was at least one staff member working at the mission’s check-in desk.
The Union Gospel Mission, which operates a 50,000-square-foot Men’s Mission that opened in 2021, serves food, provides counseling, and accommodates approximately 150 people each night. Victims of the stabbing were discovered both inside the facility’s day room and outside its premises.
Salem police are reviewing security footage from the mission, as the entire altercation was captured on video. The mission, founded by a group of Christian businesspeople, aims to support the local homeless population, and its facilities are located just a few blocks from the Salem Police Department. The situation remains under investigation, with authorities seeking to understand the events that led to the attack.
