Acting Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator David Richardson faced criticism after a meeting where he jokingly stated he was unaware of the impending hurricane season. Additionally, there have been calls from former President Trump and allies to overhaul or eliminate FEMA, with Trump labeling the agency as “very bureaucratic” during his visit to assess damage from Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has also previously suggested eliminating FEMA, although she is now making efforts to ensure the agency remains operational as hurricane season approaches.
