Federal List Identifying Multiple North Dakota Counties as ‘Sanctuary Jurisdictions’ Removed – InForum

Federal Agency Removes North Dakota Sanctuary Jurisdictions List

Fargo, ND — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has deleted a controversial list identifying several North Dakota counties as “sanctuary jurisdictions,” following a request from the National Sheriffs’ Association. The deleted list previously labeled Billings, Golden Valley, Grant, Morton, Ramsey, Slope, and Sioux counties as areas that obstruct federal immigration enforcement, a designation met with strong local opposition.

Donnell Preskey, executive director of the North Dakota Sheriff’s and Deputies Association, emphasized that the characterization was misleading and harmful, particularly as these counties supported President Trump with high electoral margins in the 2024 election. The association declared the listing a misrepresentation of how these jurisdictions uphold law enforcement.

Homeland Security’s Secretary Kristi Noem stated that “sanctuary politicians” put communities at risk, but the agency did not clarify why the North Dakota counties were included initially. A spokesperson mentioned that the list is regularly reviewed and subject to change, highlighting ongoing tensions between local law enforcement and federal policies.

The incident has raised concerns about trust and cooperation between sheriffs and the federal government, with calls for an apology from DHS echoing in the wake of the list’s deletion.
