North Dakota Secures $1 Million for Recreational Trail Projects

BISMARCK – The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department has earmarked approximately $1 million for five selected projects through its Recreational Trails Program (RTP). This funding, administered by the Federal Highway Administration, marks a record high, with 20 applications totaling $3.9 million, according to a recent press release.

Char Langehaug, grants coordinator for the department, expressed enthusiasm about the growing recognition of the RTP’s potential to revitalize communities and enhance outdoor spaces. "This year brought the largest funding requests in the program’s history," Langehaug stated, praising the RTP advisory committee’s careful evaluation of impactful proposals.

The projects awarded funding include Flasher’s historical and recreational trails project ($219,070), Watford City’s multi-use trail ($235,008), Lincoln Park’s 66th Street South Pathway ($103,845.60), Snowmobile North Dakota’s statewide trail grooming equipment ($250,000), and trail improvements at Little Missouri State Park ($249,072).

While full funding is anticipated for each project, final amounts will be confirmed upon the appropriation in March 2026. The next application cycle is expected to open in April 2026, with applications managed via the Web Grants online platform.
