SOUTHEAST MEADE COUNTY, S.D. – A Second Earthquake Rattles West River South Dakota
Residents of West River South Dakota experienced their second earthquake since March on Saturday night. The tremor, registering at a magnitude of 2.6, occurred around 9:30 PM local time, approximately 10 miles north-northwest of Wasta. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage or injuries.
The recent quake follows a similar incident on March 8, which struck the eastern portion of Custer State Park. Although South Dakota does not have major fault lines like those found in California or Japan, it is home to numerous minor faults scattered throughout the region. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a list of known faults in South Dakota, particularly in geologically rich areas like the Black Hills.
Historically, the largest quake recorded in the state was a magnitude 4.5, occurring in 1911, just south of Huron. For those interested in tracking seismic activity worldwide, more information can be found on the USGS earthquake database. Residents are urged to remain vigilant as seismic activity, although rare, can occur unpredictably.
