Glen Ullin Church Closes Its Doors After 117 Years
GLEN ULLIN, N.D. — The First Congregational United Church of Christ, a cornerstone of community life for over a century, is facing closure. With the congregation dwindling to fewer than ten members, the church has been listed for sale, marking the end of an era for many locals, including Sharon Shafer, who recalls significant life events held within its walls. "Just walking into the church…it’s like home," she says, mourning the loss.
The church, built in 1908, offers a rich history, featuring brick walls and stunning stained-glass windows. Despite its charm and potential, the building is emblematic of a wider trend, with up to 100,000 churches in the U.S. expected to close in the coming years due to demographics, rising costs, and shifts toward online worship. Realtor Josh Gartner envisions the property as a unique home on a spacious lot, listed at $70,000.
While there have been expressions of interest—from private residences to community centers—none have solidified. Shafer hopes the building finds new life, perhaps as a renovated home, preserving its legacy of faith and community spirit.
