Patient Safety Ratings for North Dakota Hospitals: A Varied Assessment

Press Release

North Dakota Hospitals Show Slow Progress in Patient Safety Ratings

BISMARCK, ND – Recent findings from The Leapfrog Group reveal a minor improvement in patient safety ratings for North Dakota hospitals, highlighted by two facilities in Bismarck achieving above-average grades. Among seven major hospitals in the state—including Trinity Health and CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck, Altru in Grand Forks, and several in Fargo and Minot—only Trinity Health and CHI St. Alexius received "B" grades, marking a positive change from previous assessments.

However, the news is tempered by alarming national statistics, with over 400,000 deaths linked to hospital safety issues annually, making patient safety a leading cause of death in the U.S. Despite no North Dakota hospitals receiving below-average ratings this spring, the remaining facilities consistently demonstrated only "C" scores, reflecting a stagnation in progress.

Data from the Spring 2025 survey indicates that while North Dakota’s hospitals are improving slowly, the overall performance remains mediocre. Key metrics evaluated include infection rates, surgical complications, and error prevention practices, underscoring an ongoing need for improvement in patient safety across the state.
