Trump Selects Doug Burgum as Secretary of the Interior

Trump Names North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as Interior Secretary

Mar-a-Lago, FL — President-elect Donald Trump announced North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as his choice for Secretary of the Department of the Interior during a gala at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The announcement came unexpectedly as Trump indicated to the audience that Burgum would lead the agency responsible for managing natural resources, public lands, and Indian affairs.

Burgum, a conservative figure and a second-term governor, had previously challenged Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Although he did not endorse Trump immediately upon suspending his campaign last December, he refrained from criticizing the former president during his run.

In his new role, Burgum will succeed Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American Cabinet member. His expertise includes a background in technology, having held a significant position at Microsoft. Interestingly, he had previously stated he would not take on a role as Trump’s running mate or as part of a future Cabinet, stating, "Happy to do lots of other things,” invoking his extensive experience in the private sector.

Speculation prior to the announcement suggested that Burgum could have been appointed as an "energy czar," a position designed to fast-track Trump’s energy agenda without the need for lengthy Senate confirmation hearings. However, his selection for the Cabinet-level role now requires Senate approval.

Trump has been actively shaping his cabinet, having already announced over 20 appointments. Some of these choices have sparked controversy, such as naming Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and Florida GOP Representative Matt Gaetz as Attorney General.

As Trump continues to build his administration, Burgum’s selection signals a focus on energy and resource management in line with the president-elect’s broader policy aims.
