Investigation Launched into July 2024 Train Derailment in North Dakota
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened a public docket regarding its ongoing investigation into a significant train derailment that occurred on July 5, 2024, involving a Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) freight train near Bordulac, North Dakota. The derailment involved 29 rail cars, including 17 tankers carrying hazardous materials, leading to the release of methanol and anhydrous ammonia. This incident sparked a pool fire in the vicinity, although initial reports indicate no injuries.
CPKC has estimated damages from the incident at approximately $3.6 million. The train was operating as a designated key train, restricted to a maximum speed of 50 mph, and an automatic emergency brake was activated during the event.
The NTSB’s investigation will focus on assessing tank car damage, reviewing maintenance and inspection records, examining infrastructure, and analyzing onboard image data as well as post-accident drone footage.
