Bismarck, N.D. – Key Candidates Emerge for NDGOP Chair Amidst Party Divisions
As the North Dakota Republican Party gears up for a leadership change, three candidates are vying to succeed Sandi Sanford as chair. Shane Goettle, a lobbyist with a past in U.S. Sen. John Hoeven’s administration, leads the pack alongside former state Sen. Judy Estenson and District 8 NDGOP vice chair Matthew Simon. The new chair will be elected during a state committee meeting in Bismarck.
The NDGOP’s recent history has been marked by significant dividing lines between its establishment and populist factions, intensifying after a controversial state primary last year. Goettle, a former national committeeman, emphasizes a need for patient and principled dialogue to unify party members. “We can have our differences. That’s OK," he stated, advocating for internal debates held with respect and understanding.
Estenson, who represented District 15 in the 2023 legislative session, views the party as standing at a crossroads and insists on reaffirming its commitment to conservative principles. She aims to foster an environment of transparency and openness, stressing the importance of grassroots engagement.
Simon echoes this sentiment, advocating for increased public engagement to demystify party operations. He believes that discussions centered around the party’s platform could help bridge existing divides.
Outgoing chair Sandi Sanford shared her decision not to seek reelection was based on consultations with party members. “I think it’s best for someone else to jump in,” she noted.
With the NDGOP controlling all statewide offices and state legislature supermajorities, the upcoming election will be pivotal in shaping the party’s direction and unity. The closed meeting awaits critical decisions that could redefine the North Dakota Republican landscape.
