Rosa Henderson: Elevating Poplar Bluff to Blues Fame

Press Release
Celebrating Rosa Henderson: Poplar Bluff’s Blues Sensation

Poplar Bluff, MO – A vibrant homage to one of the early 20th century’s greatest blues singers, Rosa Henderson, is now on display at the Poplar Bluff Museum. The museum showcases her life and achievements, celebrating her contributions to the music world during a remarkable career that spanned several decades.

Born in 1896 as Rosa Deschamps in Henderson, Kentucky, she joined her uncle’s circus troupe in 1913, which laid the foundation for her illustrious career. After marrying Douglas “Slim” Henderson in 1918, she became a prominent figure in his traveling musical show. Rosa’s recording career took off in 1923, during which she recorded over a hundred songs, gaining recognition as one of the leading blues artists of the 1920s and 1930s.

Rosa’s performances took her from Broadway stages to London, captivating audiences with her powerful voice and charismatic presence. Her legacy continues, with many remembering her vibrant contributions to the genres of blues and jazz.

Interestingly, the Poplar Bluff community has gained national attention as it was noted that the town is now officially part of the Blues Hall of Fame. This has stirred a bit of friendly rivalry with Charleston, South Carolina, which recently celebrated its own musical heritage with the hit song “Charleston” and the accompanying dance craze.

Visitors to the Poplar Bluff Museum can view Rosa Henderson’s photo and biography from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays at 1010 N. Main St. Admission is free, and the museum is handicap accessible. As they explore her remarkable life, attendees are encouraged to remember the impact Rosa had on the blues genre and American music culture.
