Riverview Dairy Plans Major Expansion in North Dakota

GARY, Minn. — Riverview LLP, operating Waukon Dairy near Gary, Minnesota, is set to expand into North Dakota by constructing two new dairies in Hillsboro and Abercrombie, which will significantly increase the state’s dairy cattle population. The farms are projected to house 25,000 and 12,500 cows, respectively, quadrupling North Dakota’s existing dairy cow count, which has dwindled from 93,000 in 1980 to approximately 9,500 today.

Waukon Dairy features an efficient milking carousel system that highlights Riverview’s innovative approach to dairy farming. As the company seeks to address the decline in local dairy operations, supporters emphasize the potential economic benefits, including opportunities for local farmers to supply feed.

However, opposition exists from groups like the Dakota Resource Council, citing environmental concerns about large-scale dairies, especially regarding manure management and water contamination risks. Riverview spokesperson Erica Boyum maintains that the company employs effective waste management techniques and has community support.

With increasing interest in dairy at North Dakota State University and state initiatives to attract processing facilities, Riverview’s move could breathe new life into the state’s dairy sector. Community open houses suggest local enthusiasm for the job creation and economic opportunities presented by the new dairies.
