CAFMA Introduces LUCAS Devices for Enhanced Cardiac Arrest Response

The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) has recently integrated LUCAS Devices into its emergency medical services, marking a significant advancement in cardiac care. These mechanical chest compression systems are specifically designed to provide continuous, high-quality chest compressions during cardiac arrest, improving patient outcomes.

Since the implementation of LUCAS Devices, CAFMA has reported a notable 20% increase in Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC), a crucial indicator that the heart has restarted. “These devices do not replace our personnel—they strengthen what we do,” emphasized Doug Niemynski, CAFMA EMS Chief. The devices provide uninterrupted CPR, particularly beneficial in challenging scenarios such as during transport in a moving ambulance.

One compelling case involved the successful treatment of a woman in her 70s who went into sudden cardiac arrest. Firefighters utilized the LUCAS device on-site, ensuring consistent high-quality compressions, which contributed to her remarkable recovery.

To ensure fiscal responsibility and broad accessibility, CAFMA collaborated with the manufacturer to acquire refurbished units, allowing the community to benefit from this life-saving technology without hindering quality. “This is an investment in improved outcomes and safer practices for both our patients and responders,” noted Interim Fire Chief John Feddema.

CAFMA is committed to ongoing innovation in service delivery, continually evaluating performance data to uphold effectiveness. This initiative underscores their dedication to elevating emergency medical care throughout the Quad Cities region, ultimately saving lives.
