Crosby, N.D. – Supply Chain Disruptions Hit North Dakota Grocery Stores
Nearly half of North Dakota’s grocery stores are facing severe supply chain disruptions following a cyberattack on major distributor United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI). The North Dakota Grocers Association reports that 60 out of 138 grocery stores in the state rely on UNFI, which has struggled to fulfill orders since the attack.
As a result, many stores are experiencing shortages, particularly of perishable items like milk. Smaller, rural grocery stores are especially vulnerable, as larger stores are prioritized for order fulfillment. “Bigger stores are probably going to get attention sooner than the smaller stores,” stated John Dyste, president of the Grocers Association.
Social media updates from various stores indicate widespread disruptions, with some unable to get essential supplies like meat, dairy, and produce. The chaos has led some community members to seek groceries in larger cities. While UNFI aims to restore services, its operations remain hampered by outdated manual processes.
Dyste raised concerns over food security in rural areas and the long-term viability of small grocery stores, reflecting on the broader vulnerabilities of the supply chain amid increasing cyber threats.
