University of North Dakota Announces Key Additions to Football Coaching Staff
Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of North Dakota’s head football coach, Eric Schmidt, has unveiled four significant appointments to the Fighting Hawks’ coaching staff for the 2025 season. Pending background checks, Gordie Haug, Ben Watkins, Keaton Wilkerson, and Tyson Maeva will join the program, enhancing its competitive edge and recruitment strategy.
Gordie Haug is set to take on the role of assistant head coach and tight ends coach. With an extensive coaching background, Haug previously served at Wyoming, where he was pivotal in coaching three 1,000-yard rushers and managing an effective recruiting strategy. His career began at Bemidji State and included success at North Dakota State, contributing to two national championships.
Ben Watkins will step in as the linebackers coach. His recent tenure at Fresno State saw him coaching standout players, with two linebackers receiving All-Mountain West honors in 2024. Watkins has significant experience, starting as a student assistant and progressing to defensive quality control roles.
Keaton Wilkerson joins as the safeties coach, bringing insights from his time at Washington, where he contributed to the team’s Pac-12 Championship victory and impressive defensive stats. His coaching career at Wyoming also showcased his ability to improve defensive performance.
Tyson Maeva, the final addition, will coach the defensive tackles. A former student-athlete with experience playing linebacker, Maeva has worked with programs like San Diego State and Washington, demonstrating his efficacy in player development and strategic game planning.
