Mapleton Resident Calls for Action on Flooding Issues

Severe Storms Highlight Concerns Over Flood Diversion Project in Mapleton

MAPLETON, N.D. (Valley News Live) — Severe storms from June 18 to June 21 caused flooding in Mapleton, raising concerns among residents about the effectiveness of the ongoing $3.2 billion flood diversion project. Local resident Marty Johnson voiced frustration, claiming that the project’s execution has neglected certain areas, particularly impacting local farmers. “Farming is a business; it’s not just a mom-and-pop operation anymore,” he said, citing the water’s stretch from Mapleton to Davenport.

Johnson is seeking clarity on the financial implications of the diversion project for Cass County citizens. He emphasizes that residents deserve to know the potential costs involved. In response, Jason Benson, executive director of the Metro Flood Diversion, reassured the public that the project aims to temporarily store floodwaters from the Red and Wild Rice Rivers before redirecting them through a designated channel. He acknowledged the recent flooding but expressed confidence that by the summer of 2026, such issues would be mitigated once the project is completed. Additionally, parallel drainage ditches are being constructed to improve water management.

As concerns persist about future flooding with looming storms, residents are encouraged to voice complaints regarding the diversion channel by calling 844-424-7782.
