Pets Also Feel the Thunder: Tips for Managing Animal Anxiety During Storms

FARGO — As thunderstorms roll through the area, it’s not just humans who grapple with anxiety; pets experience it too. According to Heather Clefstad from Homeward Animal Shelter, dogs and cats react differently to storm noises—while dogs might cower or bark excessively, cats often choose to hide.

To help pets cope with the stress of severe weather, Clefstad recommends creating a designated safe space in your home. "Adding blankets or cozy items that carry your scent can help ease their anxiety," she advised. This safe haven provides animals a retreat during tumultuous weather.

In addition to creating a comfortable environment, shelter staff also suggest employing calming aids such as pheromone diffusers and anxiety vests. These tools can significantly soothe pets, allowing them to handle storms with less distress.

As the storm season approaches, pet owners are encouraged to implement these strategies to ensure the comfort and security of their furry companions, helping them navigate the discomfort of thunder and lightning.
