Jim Irsay, Owner of the Indianapolis Colts, Passes Away at 65

Jim Irsay, the longtime owner of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away in his sleep at 65, as confirmed by the team. While no specific cause of death was mentioned, Irsay had faced various health challenges in recent years. His last public appearance was at the Colts’ training camp the previous summer, following several surgeries after a fall at his home.

Irsay’s connection to the NFL began at a young age; he was just 13 when his father, Robert Irsay, bought the Baltimore Colts in 1972. After the team moved to Indianapolis in 1984, Jim became the vice president and general manager before ascending to chief operating officer in 1996. He took over the franchise following his father’s death in 1997 and led the team to significant achievements, including a Super Bowl victory.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his sadness over Irsay’s passing, highlighting Irsay’s deep-rooted involvement in the NFL and various roles he held within the organization. Under his leadership, the Colts not only won a Super Bowl but also hosted another, and Irsay was instrumental in building Lucas Oil Stadium.

Beyond football, Irsay was noted for his extensive collection of pop-culture and historical memorabilia. His collection included guitars owned by legendary musicians like John Lennon and Prince, as well as significant literary and presidential items. Irsay was also open about his struggles with addiction, revealing in 2023 that he had undergone rehabilitation multiple times.

He is survived by his daughters—Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson—who carry on his legacy within the franchise.
