Anfernee Rondeau Convicted of Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Minor in SD

Watertown, SD – May 23, 2025 – A federal jury in Rapid City has found Anfernee Rondeau, 28, of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, guilty of Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Minor following a three-day trial. The verdict was delivered on May 22, 2025, and Rondeau faces severe penalties including a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years to life in federal prison, a potential fine of up to $250,000, supervised release for at least five years, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The incident, which occurred on April 4, 2024, was detailed during the trial, revealing that Rondeau, along with his girlfriend and her 6-year-old daughter, returned home intoxicated after an evening of drinking. A 13-year-old witness reported hearing the child crying and upon checking, discovered Rondeau on top of the young girl, with both their clothing partially down. The brave witness intervened, pushing Rondeau away and ensuring the child was taken to safety.

Rondeau was indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2024, and law enforcement agencies including the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.

Following the conviction, a presentence investigation has been ordered, with a sentencing date to be determined at a later time. Rondeau is currently in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The case underscores a significant commitment to addressing crimes against minors and ensuring justice prevails.
