North Dakota State Library Announces 2025 Great Reads

Fargo, ND – The North Dakota State Library’s Center for the Book has unveiled the North Dakota Great Read titles for 2025: “What We Leave Behind” by Barb Solberg and “Sir Rupert and the Battle of the Squirrels” by RubyAnn Stiegelmeier. Literacy Specialist Tammy Kruger expressed enthusiasm for showcasing the talents of these local authors, stating, “Great Reads from Great Places provides a wonderful opportunity to highlight North Dakota authors both nationally and across the state.”

Each year, the Library of Congress requests state Centers for the Book to select titles that reflect their state’s literary landscape for the National Book Festival. The 2025 festival is set for September 6 in Washington, D.C., and online, celebrating the importance of books and reading. Further details can be found at loc.gov/events.

The North Dakota Center for the Book invites residents to read both selected titles. “Sir Rupert and the Battle of the Squirrels” humorously explores themes of problem-solving and cooperation through the adventures of a young aspiring knight, Sir Rupert, who faces a kitchen crisis with some troublesome squirrels. This tale emphasizes perseverance and teamwork in overcoming challenges.

In contrast, “What We Leave Behind” tells a poignant story of Martin and Asta, who immigrate to America in search of a better life. Their plans dramatically shift during the tumultuous Dust Bowl years when they send their daughters to Norway. As the story unfolds against the backdrop of WWII, the family’s separation raises questions about love, identity, and connection in the face of adversity.
